Acupuncture is among the oldest healing practices in the world. As part of traditional Chinese medicine, a whole medical system that originated in China, it is based on the concept that disease results from disruption in the flow of qi and imbalance between the forces of yin and yang. Practices such as herbs, meditation, massage, and acupuncture (collectively referred to as Traditional Chinese Medicine) seek to aid healing by restoring the yin-yang balance and the proper flow of qi.
Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific points on the body by a variety of techniques, including the insertion of thin metal needles though the skin. It is intended to remove blockages that prevent the smooth flow of qi as well as restore and maintain overall health. In the United States, where practitioners incorporate healing traditions from China, Japan, Korea, and other countries, acupuncture is considered part of complementary and alternative medicine.
People use acupuncture for various types of pain. Back pain is the most commonly reported use, followed by joint pain, neck pain, and headaches. Acupuncture can successfully treat any pain disorder as well as respiratory problems, allergies, diabetes, PMS, and gastrointestinal disorders.
Acupuncture is safe.
